What Is Liver Fibrosis Evaluation?
Liver fibrosis evaluation uses noninvasive tools, most commonly elastography, to estimate the degree of scarring (fibrosis) in the liver — without the need for a traditional needle biopsy in most cases.
Why Is It Done? (Indications)
- Monitoring fatty liver disease progression
- Assessing liver damage from chronic hepatitis
- Evaluating unexplained abnormal liver function tests
How to Prepare
Step 1
A brief fasting period, typically a few hours
Step 2
No sedation is required
How It's Performed
A specialized probe is placed on the abdomen over the liver, using sound waves to measure liver stiffness as a marker of fibrosis. The scan itself takes just a few minutes and is entirely painless.
What Happens After (Recovery)
Brief rest as sedation wears off
Resume normal diet and activity
Results reviewed with your doctor
There's no recovery time needed — you can resume all normal activities immediately after the scan.
Risks
- None significant; the procedure is noninvasive and painless
Benefits
- Avoids the need for a traditional liver biopsy in most cases
- Quick, painless, and requires no sedation
- Provides an objective measure to track over time
