Screening guidelines have changed in recent years — here's what the current recommendations mean for you.
The current recommendation
Major medical organizations now recommend that most average-risk adults begin colon cancer screening at age 45, a change from the previous guideline of 50. This shift reflects rising colon cancer rates among younger adults.
When to start earlier
If you have a family history of colon cancer or polyps, a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, or certain genetic conditions, we may recommend starting screening earlier — sometimes by a decade or more.
What if I notice symptoms sooner?
Regardless of age or screening schedule, symptoms like rectal bleeding, unexplained changes in bowel habits, or unintended weight loss should always prompt a conversation with your doctor right away.
